Images of Hod Hill
Hod Hill, nr Hanford, Dorset, UK
Reported 1st June. Barley?
It's been a long wait, but the 2014 crop circle season now seems to be starting to get into gear. We have had a few crop circles so far - two in oilseed rape and one in barley. But with this second crop circle in barley we have the feeling that we are on an upward trajectory and the season is starting to kick in.
This formation was reported on the 1st of June 2014, at Hod Hill (a Roman Hill fort) in the county of Dorset. It measures approximately 180ft in diameter.
The weather has delayed our flight as it's been cloudy and wet recently. But yesterday (5th June) we finally took to the air. Fortunately, the sun was out in all of its glory and we could capture formation at its very best. Although a few days old now, the formation is still in pristine condition.
Again the circle-makers have chosen an ancient site for their latest formation. Over the years crop circles have congregated around many ancient sites in the UK. However, this particular circle was located well away from the usual Wiltshire hotspots.
We hope you all enjoy Steve Alexander's stunning pictures and would like to sincerely thank all those who have supported us recently by making donations to your flight fund.
Questions about Drones
We are often asked why we don't fly photographic drones over the formations as this would seem to be the cheaper option. However, there are strict rules regarding the use of drones in the UK for commercial purposes. You require permission from the Civil Aviation Authority for each flight, plus insurance, and you have to have the requisite qualifications to show you can operate drones safely. There are also operating parameters - you have to be at least 200ft from people, farm animals or buildings and roads - just as there are when you fly. After investigating this thoroughly, we decided that this would only complicate matters for us in recording the formations. However, the most important factor in our thinking on this is do do with what is actually achievable photographically. The stunning pictures you see above would simply not be possible using a drone where a camera is attached, facing downwards - the quality of camera equipment is also extremely limited (because of weight and design). Our aim has always been to record the formations to the best standard we can, as these pictures will form part of a legacy to future generations. However, we will continue to monitor the situation and as technology evolves who knows what will become possible? But for now we remain of the opinion that drones do not (for the present) offer a satisfactory alternative to flying.

You can help us to continue to fly this season by making a donation to our flight fund from as little as £5.00.

Latest Drawings...
On the drawing board, this formation revealed that part of its pleasing shape was hidden in at least two Golden Section ratios. The square and the circle are once again featured in this circle along with a lovely labyrinth-esque feature in the centre - seen below.
Note: All the images below are by Karen Alexander
Step one is to create a pencil line drawing. Here you can see the working out of the labyrinthine circles at the centre of the formation.
Step two is to put in the watercolour to best show the different elements of the design.
Step three involves putting ink lines in over the top pf the pencil lines.
Step four is completed by painting black in to denote the flattened areas of crop.
When the drawing is complete some analysis of the design ca be attempted.
Using special calipers, Golden Section (phi) ratios can be discovered. Above shows how phi decides the placement of the circle at the bottom of the formation.
There is also a phi ratio that links the inner square to the centre circle.

From the Crop Circle Year Book 2008...
"The fields of the Wiltshire countryside sit like a gigantic patchwork quilt elegantly draped over the many hills and vales that comprise this ancient landscape. Its many hues and textures crisscrossed with blue satin ribbons of small streams and broader canals are an unforgettable sight to anyone lucky enough to have flown over this beautiful place. During the sultry summer months, the enigmatic circle-makers embroider this velveteen coverlet with enigmatic symbols, sometimes hundreds of feet in diameter. Each year thousands of visitors throng here to visit the temporary temples constructed in this enigmatic annual summer show. Like some great cultural festival, some come to discover, some to contemplate, some just to gawk. They walk, talk, amble and ramble their way along-by long-barrows, round-barrows and stone circles in search of an elusive glimpse of something mysterious. Then slowly, the golden blanket of ripe wheat begins to disappear, to be replaced by the familiar corduroy stripes left behind by herds of great labouring harvesters signalling that another year is over. This book takes you over and through the fields of 2008 to wonder at and ponder the magical crop circles we saw there... This Special Edition combines inspirational aerial imagery with though provoking text to create a unique book full of the ambience mood and atmosphere of this amazing phenomenon."
