Sunday 10th Oct - Lecture 2 – Peter van den Burg & Melanie McCalmont.

Peter van Den Burg has been researching crop circles since 2007. Primarily their geometric properties, gradually expanding his search to the relation crop circles have with the surrounding landscape. His drawings have been featured on the Temporary Temples website for the last two years. He lives in Norway with his dog Nico.

Melanine McCalmont is a US geographer and non-fiction author based in Colorado who has studied the geography of the crop circles since 1997. Melanie has a Master’s Degree in the Geography of Communication from the Univ of Wisconsin. Her field analyzes why and how people communicate in places/locations, what tools they choose, and how those choices create shared meaning and function. Melanie visited the Wiltshire circles in 2010 and attended one of our early conferences.

Presentation: The use of written language is an effective symbolic tool to communicate vast amounts of information with a minimum use of space. Crop circles with apparent “writing” have appeared, either spontaneously or in response to our writing. Since the authors of the crop circle phenomenon are capable of communicating this way, this session asks: Why do they choose to show us writing-like symbols? And why are there so few circles with writing? What is this trying to teach us? In this presentation, we will analyse a few examples and place them in a broader context of communication. We will look deeply at two formations with writing, and discuss what next steps could be?

All lecture sessions begin at 6.00pm and finish at 7.30pm, UK time – 60 mins for the lectures + 30 mins for questions.

All times are British Summer time (BST) apart from the 31st when we will move back to GMT

Accessing Recordings of our Lectures & Workshops

We will be recording the all lectures and the geometry workshop and these will be made available as downloadable videos via a Google Drive link.

We will be using the ZOOM app for our all online sessions. If you’ve never used ZOOM before we will send you full instructions for downloading and using the app when you book. The ZOOM app is free to download and you will not need a paying account to take part. You can use ZOOM on most devices, we recommend using your PC or laptop for the best view of the presentations.
