Formation Close to Cley Hill.
When reports came in about two formations appearing on the 13th and 14th of August, we knew it was going to be a race against time to try and record the formations. More precisely, it was going to be a race to beat the harvesters, as
almost all the fields in the south of England have gone having been harvested.
Both of the formations were modest, and the one at Monarch’s Way near Fonthill in Wiltshire, did not go down particularly well with most people, and was regarded as a rough affair. The smaller of
the two events at Norridge Wood, close to Warminster, and more interestingly Cley Hill, looked like it had some interesting geometry to it. The downside was that this formation was in over ripe barley, and it is very unusual for this crop to remain unharvested so late into the summer, it is usually harvested at the end of June.
Its occurrence only left a faint impression in the crop. So on the 16th of August we took the gamble to fly to try and photograph both formations. The omens were not good because as we took off we could see as we gained height that there was not one field left unharvested. Indeed as we approached the formation at Monarch’s Way the harvesters were in the field the crop circle was located in, and indeed we
could see that the formation had been cut. Disappointed we flew on to the Norridge Wood formation to see if we would have better luck there. We could see from a way off that the field was still unharvested. As we got nearer, we could see that the small crop circle was indeed still there. Not only has this formation got some interesting geometry, its location is close to Cley Hill, which is near Warminster. Warminster’s mysterious UFO history really took off on Christmas Day in 1964 – and the
town’s residents still want answers half a century later.
